Is the Nikon D850 still a good camera in 2021? Professional Photographer Review

The Nikon D850 Review in 2021

If youre considering wether it's a good idea to buy The Nikon D850, a camera that was released in September 2017, coming up on 4 years ago, in the year 2021 - it may still be one of the greatest DSLR cameras ever made… for photography, that is. My name is Nicholas Johnson and this is the Space Warehouse.

For shooting video, while the D850 does shoot in croppless full frame 4k with an exceptionally crisp 100mBps output and it has face detection - the autofocus is practically useless when even a perfectly still subject will have the camera hunting around every few seconds rather than locking on like a sony or canon does. So for a use such as this very shot, unless you’ve got someone on the other side of the camera to set focus and walk away, its pretty cumbersome to use for video. But if youre shooting photos, this 3 and a half year old camera has no shortcomings at all.

The D850 has a 45 megapixel full frame sensor - because of that, you can effectively apply a 1.5 crop factor to the final image on a whim with a lossless digital zoom when comparing to the more typical 20 or 24 megapixels in most professional cameras.
I am a professional motorsports photographer, and occasionally in forums theres some talk about wether or not its beneficial to be using something like the D500 to take advantage of the crop factor to reach further with the same lens. But this camera has the same pixel density as a crop sensor 24MP camera, the same number of actual pixels per inch, with the added benefit of more inches! So its as if theres a D500 INSIDE the D850! The same picture taken with the same lens with a 24mp crop body, and with this full frame 45mp body, zoomed to 100% gives you the same reach.
In addition to the insane resolution, this camera has a native 64 ISO for crazy low noise and very good low light performance -4EV.

I recognize mirrorless is going to be the way to go, and this will almost certainly be the last DSLR camera I ever own, those new Sonys with their eyeball autofocus are incredible, but on this camera, as long as the little black square is where I want it, when I push the shutter on the D850 I have yet to be unable to get a shot Im after; it ALMOST never misses. The autofocus through the viewfinder is instantaneous - when using back button continuous autofocus, it tracks and uses some fancy algorithm to pull focus exactly to where a moving object is about to be, so if Im rattling off photos of race cars that are coming at me at 150 miles per hour, and I want the grill to be in focus, the grill will be in focus! While there are some little tricks and advantages to mirrorless cameras, there’s no reason a person couldn’t continue to use this camera for professional work… for ever. I dont see a future need for more than 45 megapixels.

The batteries last an extremely long time, Ive never kept track specifically but according to Nikon you get 1840 shots on one charge. Add the battery grip and that goes up to 3300! If youre taking more than that many pictures in a day, well… then you’ve got a real stamina for editing.

It’ll do automatic focus stacking for macros, automatic bracketing for HDR, automatic timelapse movies without having to combine images in 4k AND 8k if you need to crop to better tell your story. It connects to your phone where you can see through the sensor live, and take photos, focus and change controls. Its got Dual card slots for either redundancy or MEGAcapacity. Its weather sealed and dust-proof. Flick a lever and the buttons on the back are illuminated so you can see what youre doing in the dark. Nikon never changed their lens mount from the SLR days, so F-mount lenses even from 40 years ago will still fit and work on this camera. Its got an HDMI readout so you can plug it into a monitor and see what it sees. Its got a tilty screen, its got a joystick to move your focus points around. This thing is phenomenal.

So if the question is wether in 2021 the D850 is still a good buy - for photography the answer is yes. Im just so impressed by this cameras ability to shoot photos.

For video - if youre literally never going to shoot photos, Id suggest you look into a Sony or Canon camera. But if you primarily shoot photos and only occasionally need to take videos, with this camera youre going to want to either use focus peaking and manually focus, or single servo autofocus and it may be frustrating to film yourself, by yourself. Its GREAT for shooting B-roll, though! Like I said at the beginning, it uses the whole sensor readout and supersamples down to 4k, so the actual picture quality is GREAT, its just the continuous autofocusing system sucks.
Thats the Nikon D850.
