Armenia crowns its 2023 chess champions for men and women
Armenian chess champions were crowned in Armenia today.
The men's 83rd and women's 78th chess championships were held in Yerevan’s Tigran Petrosyan’s Chess home on January 22.
The Armenian Report’s sports correspondent attended the closing ceremony, where the best three were awarded.
In the men's competition, Samvel Ter-Sahakyan won his second gold medal, and in the women's competition, Maria Gevorgyan, for whom this was the fifth championship of Armenia.
The award ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia Karen Giloyan and Vice-President of Armenian Chess Federation Smbat Lputian.
Ter-Sahakyan spoke to The Armenian Report about the development of chess in Armenia. "Such successes, as well as good results in international championships, contribute to the fact that more people start playing in Armenia, and I think we are on the right track," said the gold medalist.
The champion also mentioned that The International Chess Federation (FIDE) is thinking about hosting the FIDE World Cup 2023 in Baku from July 29 to August 26.
“Thus, our attendance to the World Cup this year is questionable,” said the chess player.
It should also be noted that such victories allowed Ter-Sahakyan and Gevorgyan to play in the Armenian national team.
