Meet Robox: The Expressive Desk Robot with Survival Instincts! 🤖 | ESP32-S3 Robotics using SMARS
Welcome to the official showcase of Robox, an autonomous, emotionally intelligent companion desk robot!
Developed as an Engineering Thesis project at Independent University Bangladesh (IUB), Robox isn't just a robot that drives around—it perceives its environment, ensures its own physical safety, and communicates its internal state with genuine personality using a custom "Emotion Engine."
In this video, we demonstrate Robox's hardware architecture, sensor fusion, and its unique "Priority Interrupt" safety logic that stops it from falling off your desk!
👇 Key Features Demonstrated:
The Emotion Engine: Watch Robox's OLED eyes react to its environment (Happy, Confused/Scared, Annoyed, and Angry!).
"Jolt-First" Survival Instinct: Dual VL53L0X Time-of-Flight sensors detect cliffs and trigger an instant-reverse rescue to prevent falls.
Sensor Fusion: Blending ToF data with a US-100 Ultrasonic sensor (running in highly accurate UART mode) for robust obstacle avoidance.
BLE Control: Real-time manual override and live telemetry via our custom MIT App Inventor Android app.
⚙️ Hardware & Tech Stack:
Core: ESP32-S3 (Chosen for low-latency control and BLE)
Motors: Dual N20 Gear Motors driven by a TB6612FNG driver
Sensors: 2x VL53L0X (Cliff detection) & US-100 Ultrasonic (Obstacles)
Display: 1.3" OLED Display (RoboEyes)
Chassis: Custom-designed CAD and SMARS 3D-printed with optimized dual-board noise isolation.
Software: C++ / Arduino IDE, FluxGarage RoboEyes library, MIT App Inventor.
👨💻 The Team (Group 08):
Prince Chowdhury - Team Lead (ID: 2222653)
Independent University Bangladesh (IUB)

💡 Engineering Challenges Solved: During this build, we tackled US-100 serial buffer desyncs with read-retry logic, eliminated heavy N20 motor electrical noise using 2A104j capacitors, and optimized power distribution to prevent BLE brownouts. Drop a comment below if you want to know how we did it!
👍 If you enjoyed this project, please LIKE the video, leave a COMMENT with your thoughts, and SUBSCRIBE for more robotics and mechatronics builds!
