Saturn V rocket vs. Space Shuttle: side by side launch comparison
Even though I never actually witnessed a Saturn V launch with my own eyes, I've heard many times over the years that the the Space Shuttle vehicles jumped off the pad quite a bit quicker than the larger and heavier Saturn V rockets. But I had trouble finding a side by side real-time video comparison on the Internet, so I just made one. Enjoy.
Even though the cameras aren't the same angles and zoom levels, it's still pretty obvious how much faster the Space Shuttle lifts off and clears the tower. Yes, I realize the towers aren't the same size. Yes, I realize the vehicles aren't the same size. Just watch this video and it will be obvious to you too. Especially the first couple seconds of ascent.
The Saturn V rockets only had a thrust-to-weight ratio of about 1.2 at launch, so they tended to rise fairly slowly off the launch pad. The Space Shuttles had a higher thrust-to-weight ratio of about 1.5 at launch. So they rose more quickly than the larger and heavier Saturn V rockets. Yes, I realize that some Space Shuttle missions carried very heavy payloads which lowered their ratio and caused them to lift quite slowly. But most did not.
For anyone wondering, NASA footage like this is always released as public domain. So it's perfectly legal to use this material for educational or informational purposes.
