Why did Israel let aid into Gaza?

On the 11th week of its total blockade on Gaza, Israel's government allowed roughly 90 aid trucks to enter the besieged strip.

Although aid groups have described it as a "drop in the ocean" - amounting to less than 20 percent of Gaza's daily needs - the move was welcomed as starvation has swept across the strip over the past two months, killing dozens of children and leaving thousands more suffering acute malnutrition.

Israeli leaders have described it as "the bare minimum" and "not an ounce more" to try and convince the public to accept the change of policy. But neither seem all too happy about it.

So, why did Israel suddenly decide to let aid trucks enter Gaza? And what does this mean for the future of the war on Gaza?
