I had the opportunity join the Central Coast Collaborative Passive Acoustic Monitoring research mission recording sounds underwater north of Morro Bay. I thought this would a fun opportunity to share with you all some of footage above and below the sea and from the air of this really beautiful and unique place.

Morro Rock was formed 23 million years ago from the plugs of long-extinct volcanoes and is still scared to both the Chumash and Salinan tribes of the region. When the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey charted the region in 1883, spelled Moro Rock, the entrance to the protective harbor, now known as Morro Bay, was on the north side of Morro rock.

As we departed the harbor, we were greeted by several humpback whales, there are public whale watching boats that work out of Morro Harbor, I recommend the experience.

Our destination to recover and redeploy the soundscape monitoring equipment was off Point Estro to the north of Morro Bay. Depending on the time of year, divers might experience vast kelp beds. I got to join some amazing lady NOAA science divers to document the deployment of the soundscape recording equipment underwater and see fish eating anemones on the rocky reef and lingcod. Morro Rock Beach is a surfing and vacation destination.
