Australian dreamtime story - the world's biggest rock, Burringurrah, Mount Augustus | ABC Australia

Mount Augustus is the world's largest monolith. It's about 300 kilometres east of Carnarvan in Western Australia and it's two and a half times bigger than Uluru. The Wajarri people call it Burringurrah. Elder Charlie Snowball shared this dreamtime story with the ABC's Chris Lewis.

CHARLIE SNOWBALL, BURRINGURRAH CUSTODIAN: The story of the Mount Augustus hill and the boy called Burringurrah.
He came from somewhere in the desert way, running away from initiation.
The old people pulled him up here, speared him in the leg, the old lady hit him in the head.
He fell to the ground and he died here.
Father was born here in Mount Augustus Station. Father told me that story.
They speared him 'cause he ran away from initiation to lore and culture from the desert way.
You can see the shape of the boy laying down.
Really, back in those days, no other outsider could come to other people's country. They were pretty wild about that. Anybody came into their country, that's what they used to.
Probably they asked him before they speared him 'What do you do, where do you come from?' They probably said that to him.
They reckon he was a pretty big person too, the young fella, tall. And it is the world's biggest rock.
This is my father's country here. He was born here. It passed down through him and the generation before him.
A lot of people used to live back there in a big camp there. Another big camp along the river here. While every hill I reckon, every place, has got a story to it, this is just one of them here.
