Project Scope Statement in project management plays a huge role.

It's a checkpoint at which clients and customers approve the project scope.

Project Scope Statement is a simple document that described the work that needs to be done on a project.

Ideally, you need to write it in such a way that your clients understand it.

In no case, you want to use this document to cover your back, add hidden costs or work.

Any deliverables and any work that is not stated in the Project Scope Statement is out of the current project.

However, it should not be a detailed contract, as well.

Treat it as a mutually beneficial agreement.

You agree to plan the project further based on the contents of the Scope Statement.

Clients agree to accept the results described in it.

It also applies one crucial thing:

Clients ask for a change or additional work. It's not in the Project Scope Statement.

It means that you should be allowed to make adjustment in the project budget and schedule.

If you approach the creation of this document with the correct mindset - you'll increase the chances for project success dramatically.

In this video, I also provide a project scope statement example. We'll create it together based on a simple Web Site project.

I'll walk you through all the sections of the document showing possible language you can use.

Nevertheless, do not fix on the words I use. You need to use language that your clients understand.

They need to see the complexity and scale of the project. Ideally, they should also be able to imagine the deliverables you describe.

As a side note:

Project Scope Statement is described in the PMBOK Guide. PMI provides a specific structure. But it doesn't mean that you should follow it to the letter.

You, as a project manager, have to adapt the document so that it is useful on your given project.
