Lurking in Shadows there prowls a terrible hunger.
In the haunting gloom of old forests and the silent alleys of cities, the Skul'Reghar lurk. Born from the unholy union of troll resilience and ethereal torment, they represent the hubris of the Illithids' dark experiments. The Sect of Lurking Shadows sought to manipulate the very essence of beings, only to unleash upon the world a force they could neither control nor contain.
Skul'Reghar (Undead Troll)
Large undead, chaotic evil
Armor Class: 13 (when ethereal), 15 (when corporeal)
Hit Points: 84 (8d10+40)
Speed: 30 ft., ethereal stride 60 ft.
STR: 18 (+4)
DEX: 14 (+2)
CON: 20 (+5)
INT: 7 (-2)
WIS: 10 (0)
CHA: 8 (-1)
Saving Throws: Wis +3, Cha +2
Skills: Perception +3
Damage Immunities: poison, acid (when ethereal)
Condition Immunities: charmed, exhaustion, grappled, paralyzed, petrified, poisoned, prone, restrained (when ethereal)
Senses: darkvision 60 ft., passive Perception 13
Languages: understands Giant but can't speak (unless a Speak with Dead spell is used)
Challenge: 9 (5,000 XP)
Abilities
Ethereal Drag: Once per turn, when the Skul'Reghar hits a creature with its Ethereal Drain attack, it can force the creature to make a DC 14 Charisma saving throw. On a failure, the creature is pulled into the Ethereal Plane with the Skul'Reghar. At the end of the creature's next turn, it can repeat the saving throw to return to the Material Plane.
Shadowfell Drag: Once per turn, when the Skul'Reghar hits a creature in its corporeal form, it can force the creature to make a DC 14 Charisma saving throw. On a failure, the creature is pulled into the Shadowfell with the Skul'Reghar. At the end of the creature's next turn, it can repeat the saving throw to return to the Material Plane.
Regeneration (Corporeal Form Only): The Skul'Reghar regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn when in its corporeal form. If it takes acid or fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of its next turn.
Ethereal Stride: The Skul'Reghar can step from the Material Plane to the Ethereal Plane, or vice versa, as a bonus action.
Shadowfell Shroud: As a bonus action, the Skul'Reghar can step through the Shadowfell, drawing from its shadows to gain a corporeal form for 1 minute.
Shroud of Shadows: When in dim light or darkness, the creature can cloak itself in a veil of living shadows. These shadows cling to its form, making it indistinguishable from the surrounding darkness. When shrouded in this manner, the creature becomes effectively invisible to those relying on sight. This ability can only be activated when the creature is in its corporeal form. However, exposure to bright light disrupts this veil of shadows, forcing the creature into its incorporeal state. While in this state, it loses its physical attacks and its ability to regenerate. To regain its corporeal form and associated abilities, the creature must either create a cloud of shadows or retreat to an environment of dim light or darkness.
Horrifying Visage: Each non-undead creature within 60 feet of the Skul'Reghar that can see it must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute.
Actions
Multiattack (Corporeal Form Only): The Skul'Reghar makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its claws.
Bite (Corporeal Form Only): Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+4) piercing damage.
Claws (Corporeal Form Only): Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) slashing damage.
Ethereal Drain (Ethereal Form Only): Melee Spell Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (4d8) necrotic damage. The target's hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken. The reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0.
