Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development
In this video, we'll finish our discussion of developmental–or child–psychology by discussing moral development. We'll specifically focus on Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development and we'll go through an exercise that will allow you to assess where your moral reasoning abilities fall, according to Kohlberg.
Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development: A tool designed to categorize children’s and adolescences’ moral reasoning abilities into one of three stages: pre-conventional, conventional, or post-conventional; each stage contains two levels.
Level 1 Morality: The first level in Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development and the first level of pre-conventional morality, characterizing individuals who have the most basic moral reasoning abilities; for individuals who possess Level 1 Morality, behavior is driven by avoiding punishment.
Level 2 Morality: The second level in Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development and the second level of pre-conventional morality; for individuals who possess Level 2 Morality, behavior is driven by self-interest and rewards.
Level 3 Morality: The third level in Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development and the first level of conventional morality; for individuals who possess Level 3 Morality, behavior is driven by social approval.
Level 4 Morality: The fourth level in Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development and the second level of conventional morality; for individuals who possess Level 4 Morality, behavior is driven by obeying authority and conforming to social norms.
Level 5 Morality: The fifth level in Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development and the first level of post-conventional morality; for individuals who possess Level 5 Morality, behavior is driven by a balance of social order and individual rights.
Level 6 Morality: The sixth level in Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development and the second level of post-conventional morality; for the few individuals who make it far enough to possess Level 6 Morality, behavior is driven by internal moral principles or “universal ethics.”
