If you’re a crybaby, there’s a lucrative job for you in Taichung. A want ad was recently posted online looking to recruit five mourners for a funeral. The description reads "We need your precious tears, you just need to cry." At NT$2,000 for a two-hour cry session, would you take it?

It’s better paid than many other gigs on the market, but I wouldn’t apply. There’s other people out there who need the money from this job.

You’d need to put feeling into it, to make it real. If you’re actually crying for the deceased it would be better.

You have to get the wailing right. If you haven’t trained for half a year, or at least two to three months, there’s no way you’d be able to sob at the funeral. The sobbing has to create a sad atmosphere.
Professional wailers dressed in traditional mourning attire were once ubiquitous at Taiwan’s funerals. Their role is to cry out loud to help the family of the deceased shed tears while showing their grief. But amid changing times, the demand for professional mourners has declined. And now, the job has become a high-paying specialized gig to allow crybabies to earn some extra cash during the summer break.
