Elefun Elephant Ethical experience in Jaipur #jaipur #elephant #elephantlove #jaipurelephant
Gentle Giants & Giant Appetites: My Day at Elefun Jaipur
If you think you have a big appetite, wait until you meet an elephant! During my recent trip to Jaipur, I skipped the standard tourist traps and headed to Elefun, a dedicated sanctuary for rescued elephants. While the sanctuary offers everything from “elephant language” lessons to herbal painting, the highlight for me was the feeding session.
The Menu: Chapatis, Bananas, and Sugarcane
Feeding an elephant isn’t as simple as tossing a peanut. These majestic creatures eat up to 300 pounds of food a day! At Elefun, the diet is meticulously planned to keep them healthy and happy.
• Hand-made Chapatis: I actually got to help the mahouts (elephant caretakers) prepare giant Indian flatbreads called rotis over a traditional mud stove.
• Sweet Treats: Bananas and sugarcane are the crowd favorites. Watching an elephant deftly wrap its trunk around a single banana is a masterclass in coordination.
The “Snout-to-Hand” Connection
The most incredible part of the experience is the physical contact. Before you even start feeding, the staff encourages a “Meet and Greet.
Pro Tip: Let the elephant catch your scent first. Approach with calm energy, look them in the eye, and speak softly. It builds a bond of trust that makes the feeding feel like a shared meal between friends rather than just a chore.
When you hold out a piece of fruit, you feel the incredible power and sandpaper-like texture of the trunk.
Feeding the elephants at Elefun wasn’t just a “photo op”—it was a lesson in empathy. Seeing the care the mahouts provide and the intelligence in the elephants’ eyes changed how I view wildlife tourism. If you’re in the Pink City, give the “big guys” a visit. Just be prepared: they never get full!
Don’t just visit Jaipur—live the experience.**
