Someone asked, "What does RUS do with the money?"

What We Do

1. Sink water wells in villages where there is no clean running water (material and labour costs included)
2. Build houses (material and labour costs included)
3. Repair houses (material and labour costs included)
4. Cement floors (material and labour costs included). This is one of the most effective ways of preventing jiggers because they do not survive on concreted/cemented floors.
5. Purchase of bedding (includes mattress, frame, blankets, sheets), furniture and other necessary household items
6. Purchase of clothes, under garments, shoes (and toys for the children)
7. Purchase of groceries and hygiene products
8. Purchase of baby formula for babies who refuse to take breast milk, are underweight, or are malnourished, in order to improve their health
9. Provide nannies for children and elderly people who are neglected and vulnerable. Nannies are paid a monthly salary and given a food basket.
10. Payment of rent for widows who are experiencing financial hardship
11. Cover medical expenses such as doctor's visits, assessments, and hospital stays, surgeries, treatment, medication, blood tests, x-rays, chemotherapy for persons with cancer, eye examinations and purchase of prescription eye glasses and dental services
12. Purchase of medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and crutch sticks for people with disabilities
13. Sponsor persons who suffer from substance abuse and addiction to go to Rehab
14. Cover funeral expenses for persons whose families cannot afford this payment
15. Purchase of school uniforms and supplies (includes uniforms, sweaters, socks, shoes, backpack, books, pencils, crayons) for children whose parents cannot afford to send them to school. RUS is a huge supporter of youth education because this is key for them to break the cycle of poverty.
16. Cover the cost of tuition, exams and lunch for students whose parents cannot afford to pay these fees
17. Provide motorcycle (piki piki) transportation for children who are unable to walk to school because of the far distance
18. Provide capital for people to start their own business in order to help them become more self-sufficient so that they can better provide for their families
19. Provide tools and other related resources to persons who do farming
20. Cover office expenses including rent, utilities, purchase of stationery and office supplies, salaries for employees who work in our Bungoma office and in the field in the various counties. Given that we work in various counties, some of which are far away from where we are based, field workers are hired to be present in these counties to help take care of families on our behalf.
21. Cover fuel, maintenance and repair costs for our vehicle
22. Free medical mobile clinics to remote villages where testing is done and where needed referrals are instituted to appropriate medical facilities.
23. Cover the cost of hotel accommodation and meals for the team when we travel to far away counties for work.
24. Support young talent - games and sports (football and volleyball) and music (mainly choral music presented during Boxing Day celebrations).
25. Cover the cost to clear boxes when they are received at customs. When boxes are received from donors, RUS is required to pay 25% of the value of the items inside the box. These customs clearance fees can be very expensive because when donors write the full value of the items that are inside the box, we sometimes end up paying hundreds of dollars in customs fees. Unfortunately, often times we are not reimbursed these fees by donors, so we have to bear the full cost. Hence, we appeal to donors who send us boxes to help us by either writing a very minimal value for the items inside the box so that we do not pay much, or by reimbursing us for the amount spent in customs fees.
