Thine Alabaster Cities Gleam, 1893 (silent, still image)

View from the Peristyle at the Chicago World's Fair (the Columbian Exposition) in 1893.

Katherine Lee Bates was inspired by the shining buildings at this fair to pen the words "thine alabaster cities gleam" in the song “America the Beautiful”. (I do not know if the ‘gleam’ refers to the daylight reflecting off the facades, as in this image, or the view of them at night, when they were … let’s just say rather well lit.)
