Building A Tiny House: Step 2 - Extending the Trailer

After we insulated the floor of our trailer, we extended our trailer's frame outwards by attaching 2x4s all the way around the outside of the metal frame, flush with the top of the deck.
Tomorrow we will add 3.5 inch strips of plywood on the outside of that to extend the surface a little farther.

The purpose of this is two-fold:
One is to maximize our square footage inside the trailer, since we can only be 8.5 feet wide at the widest point (wheel wells) in order to remain street legal without needed a special permit for hauling a wide load.
The other is to provide a pretty large wooden surface to nail our wall framing into, rather than having to screw the bottom plates of the walls directly down into the metal trailer frame.

The ability to use a nail gun to nail the walls to this wooden framing rather than having to use self-tapping screws to screw them into the metal frame saves LOTS of time and energy.

To attach the 2x4s to the trailer frame, we used TEKS brand self-tapping wood-to-metal screws, which we found at Lowes (they were not super easy to find) and a battery-powered Dewalt impact driver.
