Join me for an ultra high definition 4k driving tour of the Galveston Island Seawall!

Galveston is an island off the Gulf Coast in Texas. It is very long and skinny, with a beach that faces the Gulf of Mexico.

Galveston Seawall was built along the beach in Galveston Island. The seawall was built to protect the island from hurricanes. Galveston Seawall was built in response to the devastating 1900 Galveston Hurricane which caused significant property damage and killed thousands of people. The Galveston hurricane was also called the Great Storm.

After the Great Storm hit Galveston, engineers built the seawall to protect the city. The seawall is in between the beach and the street. The street that runs along the Galveston Seawall is called Seawall Boulevard.

Seawall Boulevard is a major street on Galveston Island and is particularly popular with tourists. There are many hotels on one side of the street with views overlooking the ocean. There are also many restaurants, bars, and stores that sell beach toys, towels and offer equipment rentals to beach goers. On the beach side of the seawall you will also see Murdochs, which is a tourist and souvenir store that has been at that location for a very long time.

Prior to the Great Storm in Galveston, Galveston Island was an important port and thriving city. Although the seawall was built to protect the city from further storms, Galveston Island would never be the same after the storm. Many of the commercial interests that were previously based out of Galveston moved to Houston, and the Port of Houston and the Houston Shipping Channel became an economic powerhouse in the area. Galveston lost much of its industry and many people were still concerned about living in the area due to the impact of hurricanes.

Galveston remains a popular tourist destination and weekend getaway location for people living in the Houston area. The beach along the Galveston seawall is easily accessed for day trips or weekends. There are many beach houses that people enjoy renting out for the week and enjoying themselves.

Although the Galveston Seawall was not ultimately able to keep Galveston as the major city in the area, the seawall has protected Galveston Island from significant amounts of hurricane damage over the last century. The Galveston Seawall prevented significant damage during Alicia, and undoubtedly mitigated much of the damage that could have occurred during Hurricane Ike.

Hurricanes will always be an important factor in life along the Gulf Coast. The Galveston Island Seawall has protected the island for many years and created a popular tourist destination in the area.

During this drive along the Galveston Island Seawall we will pass many well known Galveston locations. Keep an eye out for some great restaurants offering tasty seafood! We will pass Murdochs store as well as Pleasure Pier.

The ocean off the Galveston Seawall is not the prettiest. It is usually a murky brown. It is still a nice enough beach to get to within an hour of a major city though. Galveston has lots of seagulls that like to fly overhead and there are lots of different fish in the ocean including some sharks. At night there are little crabs that run up and down on the beach that children like to try and catch in buckets. #GalvestonSeawall #GalvestonTexas #GalvestonIsland
