Are Tourists Breaking Quarantine in Hawaii?
First, it’s wrong to break quarantine in Hawaii. This video isn’t about asking whether it’s right or wrong. It’s about trying to get into the mind of people who do break quarantine and to see if I can figure out why it would be worth it for so many people to come to Hawaii knowing that they have to stay in their hotel room for 14 straight days before going outside.
Hawaii is getting roughly 300-400 visitors each day, (since July, it's been about 700-800 per day) so unless they can afford to stay in a hotel room for two weeks doing nothing and then additional days to experience Hawaii, that’s a lot of tourists who are walking around. Also, I know that the quarantine also applies to Hawaii residents who are returning, but I won’t really be talking about that because that’s a whole other issue.
If you haven’t heard, my basic understanding of the quarantine rule, at least until August 1, is that if you come to Hawaii, you have to provide your information with Health officials and must quarantine yourself for 14 days. The Department of Transportation or other government agencies will contact you at random times to make sure you aren’t outside. Once the 14 days are over, you can go outside. The penalties for violating the 14 day quarantine are up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $5000.
Again, I do not advocate that people come to Hawaii and break quarantine. I’m really just trying to talk through what these people are thinking coming here because I just don’t understand why they would.
Correction: In the video, I stated that contact tracers contact people who are supposed to be in quarantine. It is actually the responsibility of the Department of Transportation with the assistance of other governmental agencies.
