Let's learn some information about Oxford University!
Oxford University is located in the city of Oxford in the South East of England. It is one of Britain's oldest universities.
This university holds the first and leading positions among the prestigious universities in the world.
The history of Oxford University dates back to 1096, but the exact date of its foundation is unknown. The university was established, perhaps after English students were banned to study at the University of Paris around 1167. A large number of English students were sent from France and settled in Oxford, where they were able to continue their studies. Oxford was modeled on the University of Paris, with initial faculties of theology, law, medicine, and the liberal arts.
The university had no buildings in its early years; lectures were given in hired halls or churches.
There were no women at Oxford until 1878, when the first women's college Lady Margaret Hall, opened. Now most colleges are open to men and women.
Oxford is somewhat similar to a small federal state: in addition to the central university, there are 38 Oxford Colleges and 6 Permanent Private Halls which enjoy self-government and financial independence. That being said, Oxford colleges are unique multidisciplinary academic communities: they have no particular specialization, so a college student can study at any of the approximately 100 academic departments from theology and Oriental studies, to genetics and IT. All of them are united in four major areas:

• Humanities;
• Social Sciences;
• Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences;
• Medicine.

At the University of Oxford, 4,000 teachers work and 80 of them belong to the Royal Society, more than 100 people are members of the British Academy.
Most people think the University of Oxford is exclusively for wealthy students and royalty. On the one hand, this is quite reasonable: the cost of a course in Oxford can only be compared with the cost of studying in Cambridge, and 40% of first-year students come after finishing elite private schools. On the other hand, like all leading universities, Oxford is interested in gathering the most brilliant students and thereby maintaining the status of one of the best universities in the world. Therefore, each student can apply for financial assistance – from special grants for citizens of underdeveloped countries to faculty scholarships for excellent academic performance or success in research.
Oxford University has nearly two hundred libraries, museums, and its own publishing house. The libraries store numerous ancient manuscripts. The territory of the university is truly huge: each college has its own dining room, bar, library, lounge and dormitories.

Currently, over 25,000 students are studying at Oxford, and half of them are foreigners. The main condition for foreign students is a good knowledge of English. To this end, annual summer language schools are opened to help such students.
