How to Classify a Lead Glass–Filled Ruby by GIA. How does a synthetic ruby compare to a natural ruby? Some gemstones have synthetic counterparts with essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties, but are grown by man in a laboratory. One of the more recent and controversial developments in the gem market is filling ruby gems with lead glass. It is a process of taking very low-quality ruby that is opaque and then filling it with lead glass, which changes its appearance to transparent and makes it easier to cut. There may be large gas bubbles inside the stone, or even flat bubbles that show the ruby has been modified.
