Ashna Kumar provide a brief on the public interest cases from Suva and Lautoka.

1. 24-year-old Simione Sekonaia Batimona Nakuna Jnr who is alleged to have claimed that he had recently returned from overseas and experienced symptoms of coronavirus will enter a plea on Thursday. Nakuna Jnr is charged with two counts of giving false information to a public servant and one count of malicious act.

2. The High Court in Suva has ordered Rusiate Raiwalui, a 32-year-old farmer facing murder and drug charges to apply for Legal Aid assistance. This is after the previous defence counsel, made an application for leave to withdraw as counsel on record due to her employment and unavailability for trial in July. Raiwalui is facing one count each of murder and of unlawful possession of illicit drug. For the offence of murder, it is alleged that on May 8, 2019, at Qeleya Road in Lami, Suva, Raiwalui murdered New Zealand national Ashkan Farsani Rikthegazader. For the offence of unlawful possession of illicit drugs, it is alleged that on May 8, 2019, at Suva, Raiwalui without lawful authority, had in his possession 101.3 grams of illicit drugs, namely cocaine.

3. 26-year-old athlete who is alleged to have stabbed his 39-year-old partner at an apartment complex in Suva in December last year, will enter his plea next month. Kennol Suraj Narayan appeared before the High Court in Suva today and is charged with one count of act with intent to cause grievous harm. The accused allegedly stabbed his girlfriend (the complainant) in her stomach with a kitchen knife during a drinking party after a heated exchange on December 8, 2019.

4. Mohammed Ahmed who is charged with one count of murder and one count of breach of Domestic. Violence Restraining Order (DVRO) appeared before the High Court in Lautoka today. Ahmed is alleged to have killed his wife, Shabina Nisha in November last year.
