Cairo's new Grand Egyptian Museum to become one of Middle East and Africa's top tourist destination
#Cairo #GEM #GrandEgyptianMuseum #MiddleEast #NorthAfrica #Tourist
The much awaited Grand Egyptian Museum is set to open doors to the world. Its not often that some big positive news comes from this part of the world and hence the Grand Egyptian Museum has created euphoria around it for those who call Middle East and North Africa their home.
While Egypt government has been planning to inaugurate the museum for a long time, they seem to be confident it will final happen towards the end of 2020. The museum was opened for tourists for short period in 2019 but had to be shut again because it became so popular that it slowed down pending construction work of the museum. Where the old museum has been a storehouse of treasures, the new one is a $1 billion state-of-the-art, glass and concrete display space that leads guests through a journey similar to Howard Carter's when he discovered the Boy King's tomb a century ago. The new location—outside central Cairo, on the Giza plateau on the edge of the Western Desert—looks out at the famous pyramids and adds even more atmosphere.
Egypt’s cabinet has said that five million people are expected to visit the highly-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum on an annual basis, adding in a new info graph released this week that 90 percent of construction work and artefact transfers have been completed for the new mega museum. The museum is set to open its doors to visitors this year.
The big challenge now is to synchronise between completing the construction works and getting the artefacts ready and in place in the museum in time for the grand opening. From tourists to art lovers all can’t wait for the museum to open doors to the public. Meanwhile the government of Egypt is planning to make the opening as grand as the name of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
