Rachmaninoff, Paganini Rhapsody op. 43

It was not in California, but back in the Old World, at Lake Lucerne in Switzerland, that Rachmaninoff felt motivated to compose again, after a longer break. His “Rapsodie sur un thème de Paganini op. 43” is based on a theme by Niccolò Paganini that the violin virtuoso used in his 24th Caprice as the starting point for 11 variations. We can imagine that Rachmaninoff`s self-designed Villa Senar in Weggis was a major source of inspiration. And maybe also his passion for motorboating! Get the new Urtext edition of his work now, piano reduction at Henle with fingerings by Marc-André Hamelin:
