Scaling Up Landscape Restoration from Rwanda across the Continent of Africa (extended version)
The Rwanda Government, along with IUCN, worked with thousands of farmers and others to restore more than 700,000 hectares of degraded land, sequestering an estimated 100 million tonnes of CO2 and supporting 22,325 jobs along the way.
Rwanda’s transformative landscape restoration journey started in 2011 when it became the first country in Africa to pledge to restore land as part of the Bonn Challenge. Rwanda established the ambitious goal of bringing two million hectares of deforested and degraded land into restoration by 2020. Later, the country continued to demonstrate its leadership through the highly successful African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100), a regional platform of the Bonn Challenge.
