Master Strategy. Problem Solving in Games. #mtg
Today I sit down with a true legend of professional Magic: The Gathering.
Nathan Steuer started dominating Magic Online as a kid before turning pro in 2018. Since then, he racked up three Pro Tour top finishes—including two outright wins—and took home the title of 2022 Magic World Champion.
We met in Las Vegas after he made a last-minute decision to drop a $5,000 entry fee on a high-stakes Vintage Cube tournament I was running right before his next Pro Tour appearance. In this conversation, we talk about his mindset, his history, and some incredible parallel paths we share.
Inside our discussion:
The $5,000 Gamble. Why a reigning World Champion risked a massive entry fee to test his skills under high pressure.
The Prodigy Years. How a childhood camp counselor introduced him to the game, leading him to make history as the youngest player to Day 2 a Grand Prix at just 12 years old.
Sneaking to Detroit. The hilarious and wild story of how a 15-year-old Nathan tricked his school and defied his parents to fly across the country for a team tournament.
Shared Symmetries. We uncover our bizarre personal coincidences, from growing up in the Bay Area to dropping out of UC Santa Cruz to pursue competitive Magic.
Whether you want to learn the tactical history of a world champion or hear great behind-the-scenes tournament stories, this conversation delivers.
