A language model does not know your data. It knows everything it saw during training, which is a lot, but it is not your data. That gap is where RAG comes in. Imagine you are building a chatbot for 10th standard students learning science. You want it to teach only from the NCERT textbook.

Without RAG, you pass the student's question straight to the model and it answers from its entire training — random sources, advanced content, anything. The student asked about photosynthesis and the model might pull from a PhD-level biology paper. RAG fixes this by retrieving the right document first, then passing it to the model along with the question. Now the model only works with what you gave it.
