USIU-Africa 50th Anniversary Documentary

USIU-Africa traces its history to 1927 when the Balboa Law College was chartered as a private graduate institution in San Diego (USA). The college later changed its name to Balboa University in 1945. In 1952, Balboa University again changed its name to California Western University.
In 1953 Dr. William C. Rust became the university’s president. He had a vision of international education that would see students and faculty share and embrace knowledge around the world.
In 1967, the university’s name was changed to United States International University (USIU). The university established branch campuses for different world regions, namely, Tokyo in Japan, London in the UK, Mexico City in Mexico, and for Africa Kenya was selected.
USIU in Kenya was registered under the Companies Act (Cap 486) on 18th September, 1969. In 1970, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between USIU and the Government of Kenya that allowed the university to offer business programs and any other degree programs not being offered by the public universities.
In 1977, USIU-Africa began to offer accredited full degree programs in Business Administration, Psychology and International Relations. Today, USIU-Africa has six schools: The School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Chandaria School of Business, School of Science and Technology, School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, School of Communication, Cinematic and Creative Arts and the School of Graduate Studies, Research and Extension.
In 1991, USIU-Africa moved to Kasarani, Nairobi.
In 1994, Professor Freida Brown, who later assumed the title of Vice-Chancellor following the award of its Charter from the Kenyan Government. In 1999, following legal reforms to the higher education sub-sector, USIU-Africa received a formal charter.
In 2001, the Africa campus separated from the rest of the USIU campuses.
In 2005, USIU-Africa then sought and subsequently received independent accreditation from WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) as USIU-Africa and was also granted Kenyan accreditation by the Commission for University Education.
The number of academic programs has expanded from 4 in 1990 to 27 fully accredited programs today.
