Why Big Shoal Bass Avoid Pools (Opposite of Every Other Bass!) – EP.9
Finally—the first true “little guy” of the day.
This smaller male shoal bass looks a bit different, with coloration that could easily fool you at first glance. But there are still key features that give it away—and I point out exactly what to look for.
Where it was caught also tells an important story.
This fish came from slower water, which is another sign that spawning activity is ramping up. Smaller males often move into these areas to prepare and defend nests.
From there, I move into one of the biggest pools in the stream.
It looks perfect.
Deep. Calm. Fishy.
But here’s the reality…
These pools rarely hold the number—or size—of fish you’d expect.
Unlike other black bass species like smallmouth bass or redeye bass, larger shoal bass tend to avoid these slower areas. Instead, they stay out in the faster current where most anglers wouldn’t even think to fish.
The pools? That’s where you usually find the smaller fish.
It’s completely backwards from what most bass anglers are used to.
And the more time you spend chasing shoal bass, the more you realize…
they don’t follow the rules.
