Arden Shank is a community development consultant with over thirty years of executive leadership experience, and working with nonprofits doing housing, neighborhood revitalization, and social services. He has consulted with and advised numerous nonprofit organizations and executives in South Florida; Elkhart County, Indiana; and elsewhere.Arden has a deep knowledge of specialized community-based housing and neighborhood revitalization issues including corporation start-ups, organizational restructuring, fundraising and capital project implementation. As an experienced community development professional, he can assist your organization in the following ways to define and fulfill your economic and social justice mission.Arden was the Interim Executive Director and Transition Consultant for the South Florida Community Development Coalition (SFCDC) from October 2018 to June 2019. After being the founding board chair for many years, he assisted the organization through a significant time of transition as the Interim Executive Director as well as successfully leading the search with the board of directors for the new Executive Director. He assisted with the orientation of the new Executive Director. SFCDC’s mission is to expand the capacity of the community development field to develop affordable housing and economic opportunities for low and moderate income individuals while promoting collaborative, inclusive policy and practice to invest in people, neighborhoods and social capital throughout Miami-Dade County.Arden was President & CEO of Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida (NHSSF) from June 2001 to January 2018. In partnership with the board and staff, he led the effort to expand NHSSF from a small agency with four staff members to a sophisticated operation with a professional team, an engaged board, and an expanded territory that includes Miami-Dade and Broward counties, and Palm Beach County for lending and realty services. NHSSF provides programming in homebuyer preparation, mortgage lending, housing development, real estate services, and neighborhood revitalization. During Arden’s leadership, NHSSF utilized $3.5 million from financial institutions for down payment assistance and lending capital to put more families into homeownership and managed Neighborhood LIFT $6.3 million grant, resulting in 220 families receiving $30,000 forgivable down payment assistance grants. NHSSF also secured, along with numerous partners, more than $120 million in federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program funding that led to 1,700 new and rehabbed rental and homeownership units in South Florida. NHSSF quickly responded to the foreclosure crisis by providing approximately 11,000 families with guidance from trained counselors on how to avoid foreclosure and partnered with Fannie Mae to open and staff the first Mortgage Help Center in the U.S. in 2010, which was the first time Fannie Mae worked directly with mortgage borrowers. Prior to his work in South Florida, Arden led Lacasa in Goshen, Indiana, as its Executive Director for thirteen and half years. During that time, Lacasa grew from a small social service agency to a key provider of affordable housing and a leader in neighborhood revitalization. During Arden’s leadership, Lacasa began developing single family and multifamily housing, created an enduring annual home repair day, Help-A-House, which uses hundreds of volunteers to repair and weatherize owner-occupied homes, and established of one of Indiana’s first Individual Development Account (IDA) programs, empowering participants to save for buying a home, starting or sustaining a micro business, or securing post-secondary education. Arden is a board member of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition and a former member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors Community Advisory Council.
