In Madhya Pradesh, a heartbreaking protest is taking place where tribal mothers are seen lying on funeral pyres along with their children. These shocking visuals have raised a serious question—what is happening in this part of India?
This protest is linked to the Ken-Betwa River Linking Project, a major initiative of the central government. The project aims to connect the Ken River with the Betwa River through a 212 km long canal, bringing water to the drought-prone Bundelkhand region.
However, the local tribal communities of Chhatarpur are strongly opposing this project. According to them, the project will destroy their forests, homes, and ancestral land. Reports suggest that 24 villages will be relocated, and around 10 villages may get submerged.
The government is offering compensation of ₹12.5 lakh per family, but the affected people are demanding at least ₹25 lakh, arguing that the current amount is insufficient for rebuilding their lives.
On the other side, the government claims that this project will bring major benefits: ✅ Irrigation water for 11 lakh hectares of land
✅ Around 100 MW electricity generation
✅ Clean drinking water for nearly 65 lakh people
✅ Impact across 13 districts (9 in MP and 4 in UP)
This issue has now become a debate between development and existence—where both sides have strong arguments.
