𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗨𝗣𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧: Massive Falsework Installed Beneath Pier for Bridge Removal
SANTA MONICA, Calif. — On Wednesday morning, June 17, 2026, crews from Shimmick Construction continued work on the Santa Monica Pier Bridge Replacement Project, installing large sections of falsework beneath the existing bridge while demolition activities progressed above.
Using heavy equipment, workers maneuvered massive steel beams and timber-braced frames into place beneath the bridge structure. Falsework is a temporary support system used during construction and demolition to help carry loads, stabilize structures, and provide support while permanent components are removed, repaired, or replaced.
The steel-and-timber assemblies visible at the site are part of a growing network of temporary supports being installed beneath the bridge as crews prepare for more extensive demolition of the aging structure.
Above the bridge, workers continued saw-cutting and breaking into the concrete ramp deck. Fresh cuts were visible along the former vehicle access ramp as demolition crews worked to remove sections of the existing bridge approach.
The work follows the recent opening of the temporary pedestrian bridge, which now serves as the primary access route to the Santa Monica Pier. The temporary span allows visitors to continue accessing the pier while construction advances on the permanent replacement bridge.
According to project plans, demolition of the existing bridge will occur in phases over the coming months. The bridge replacement project is intended to improve accessibility, enhance seismic resilience, and modernize critical infrastructure at one of Santa Monica's most recognizable landmarks.
Businesses on the Santa Monica Pier remain open and accessible via the temporary pedestrian bridge throughout construction.
Santa Monica Closeup continues to document the progress of the Santa Monica Pier Bridge Replacement Project as crews advance into the next phase of demolition and structural support operations.
