MINI TOURTIERES - VEGAN MEAT PIE WITH FRUIT KETCHUP - QUÉBEC CLASSIC

Hi everyone!

In Québec, it's almost unthinkable to celebrate the holidays without tourtière, our traditional meat pie. Even after moving to Germany and switching to a vegan diet, I've been eating it every year, usually with millet. This year, I wanted to experiment with the new plant-based meats on the market and wow, I absolutely loved the result. My mini tourtieres were a big hit at my birthday party, with both my German and Quebec expat friends :)

INGREDIENTS TOURTIERES
0,5 lbs plant-based ground meat*
1 small onion
2 garlic cloves
1 medium-size potato
1 celery stalk
1 carrot
1 tablespoon (15ml) soy sauce
1 teaspoon (5ml) steak spices (optional)
1 teaspoon mustard powder
½ teaspoon all-spice
½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 puff pastry + 1 pizza dough

INSTRUCTIONS
In a pan on medium-high heat, soften the onions a few minutes before adding all the finely diced veggies and minced garlic. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring often and adding water as necessary to help cook the veggies (around 1 cup in total).
Once the veggies are tender, add the "meat" and break up with a fork. Add seasoning and cook around 5 minutes. Taste and adjust if necessary.
The mix should not be too runny, most of the water should be absorbed/evaporated.

TURNOVERS
Once the filling ready, cut your puff pastry in equal squares and place a spoonful in the center of each square. Wet the sides with water and fold over itself to form a triangle. Seal the 2 sides with a fork and pierce the top to let the air out.
Brush with a little bit of olive oil and bake in the oven preheated to 400F (200C) for 20 minutes or until nice and golden.

PIZZA ROLLS
If necessary, flatten your dough until 5mm thick. Spread the filling all over, leaving a small border and roll as firmly as possible. Cut the number of portions needed and transfer to a prepared baking sheet on their side. Brush with a little bit of olive oil and bake in the oven preheated to 400F (200C) for 20 minutes or until nice and golden.

*if you're in Canada, I recommend Lightlife or Yves' ground, which can easily be found in supermarkets

FRUIT KETCHUP
1 apple
1 pear
4 tomatos
1 onion
1/2 red bell pepper
1/4 cup (50g) sugar
1/4 cup (60ml) vinegar
1/2 piece cinnamon
1 bay leaf
3 cloves
1/2 teaspoon coriander

INSTRUCTIONS
Dice the fruits and veggies finely and add to a medium-size saucepan. Add the sugar and vinegar and gently bring to a boil, mixing often.
Place the spices in a cheesecloth or tea ball and add to the saucepan so it can infuse. Lower the heat and let simmer for 1h - 1h30 or until reduced and most of the liquid is gone, stirring occasionally. Remove the spice bundle.

Serve hot or cold with the tourtières.
