There is a wide range of sentences available to a judge who is sentencing someone found guilty of a criminal offense in the U.S. When someone is arrested after committing a crime, a judge must decide what sentence will best fit the crime. We looked through the internet and put together some 55 jail terms for crimes in this video.

The majority of the American judges who sit on criminal cases would admit that the most trying facet of their jobs is certainly "Sentencing." Determining jail terms is no easy thing. Sentencing is always contentious. The public can be quick to anger, especially when courts hand out sentences seen as too lenient.

How does a judge get to determine jail terms for crimes? There are several, but chief among them is the nature of the crime and the criminal history of the defendant.

Then there are lots of other considerations that may play into it in greater or lesser degrees, such as mitigating factors, meaning evidence that tends to explain, if not excuse why the crime was committed or which affects the defendant’s intent. Victim impact statements, testimonials on behalf of the defendant, the notoriety of the crime, and the way that particular crime has been dealt with previously all play a part.

A good judge considers everything and uses all of it to render a sentence as fairly and appropriately as possible. It’s a daunting responsibility, being a judge, and the majority of them attempt to fulfill that responsibility as best they are able.
