1972 Mercedes Benz 350SLC (C107) Review, walkaround, in-depth tour, and test drive
If you think today's Mercedes naming is confusing, around 50 years ago, it was way more confusing.
The R107 SL Class was the successor to the W113 SL Class (commonly known as Pagoda or Mr. Slim from the cigarette commercial). It featured 2 doors, 2 seats, and a removable roof. Alongside the R107, however was the C107 SLC Class which still had 2 doors, but had 4+1 seats, a non-removable coupe roof, and a wheelbase that is 14 inches longer. To make things even more confusing, the roadster/convertible R107 SL Class later on became the R129 SL Class, while the C107 became the C126 S Class Coupe/SEC, and even later became the CL Class.
The one we're reviewing here today is a 1972 Euro spec 350SLC which has a 3.5L M116 V8 engine making a 200PS, and 286Nm of torque, which was a lot for its time, and a 3 speed automatic. Despite these power figures being pretty healthy for its time, the engine car weighs around 2 tons, so don't expect this to be fast, especially for today's standards.
Rarer: 62,888 built vs 237,287 of the R107
1972 - 1989 (1971 - 1980 for the 350SLC)
Similar chassis to the W114, engines from the W108/W109/W111
200PS, 286Nm
3 Speed auto (4 Speed auto after 1980)
212kph top speed
ABS only after 1980
Recirculating ball
2050kg
