Finding a Career in Architecture and STEAM fields | Science

This video is about Finding a career in Architecture and STEAM Fields. This is Part 1, Science. Finding a career that suits you is about discovering who you are in conjunction with finding subject matter that appeals to you. I’m an architect and I understand that Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics all relate to Architecture in one way or another.

Contrary to popular thinking architects use science in their jobs. First and foremost there’s an endless amount of science that goes into building. In specific, materials science. Materials have to work. And when they don’t they buildings eventually become uninhabitable. One of the ways architects synthesize a comprehensive design process is to use the scientific method. First, architects make hundreds of observations through the research of building sites, and meetings with clients and contractors. Then they Hypothesize about design decisions which may work best. They test their Hypothesis by evaluating design iterations through experimentation and analysis. And they eventually make conclusions regarding which works best. This is Art as much as it is Science. Apart from architecture the sciences encompass a vast array of disciplines. In the Formal Sciences a professional like an actuary uses mathematics, statistics and logic to asses financial risk for businesses. In the Social Sciences the Information scientist is interested in where information comes from, how it’s collected, stored, retrieved, interpreted and utilized. This is done in an effort to understand behavior as it relates to business, or social media and website performance. And in the Natural sciences Physicists solve practical problems to develop new technologies in biomechanics for the disabled, nuclear technology for power plants, or magnetics for advances in healthcare or travel. Circling back to the architect. The materials scientist works on the discovery and design of new products that help designers and business make buildings more efficient or beautiful. So, you may find that the science within architecture is even more enticing than the field of architecture itself. If so, perhaps it’s the sciences that you want to pursue. I’m Doug Patt and I’ve been helping students for the last decade find what they like to do and I’m happy to help you too. We’ll see you next time.
