Lakes Entrance to Sorrento for Queenscliff Ferry to start the Great Ocean Road drive #greatoceanroad

What we’ve come to realise pretty quickly on our trip is that the destination is often far less important than the journey itself.

From Lakes Entrance in Victoria, we made a few stops before boarding the ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff to start the Great Ocean Road drive from Torquay. We charged the car at Traralgon on the way.

🤜 Paynesville - boat capital, but also home to many types of wildlife including kangaroos, echidnas, black swans, pelicans and sea eagles. We mainly spotted the black swans and pelicans on our stop. Visitors can also catch a 2 minute ferry from here to Raymond Island, the best place in Australia for koala spotting.
🤜 Eagle Point Reserve - home to a pair of peregrine falcons and many other special plants and animals. The Eagle Point to Paynesville track is only a few kilometres long and good for wildlife spotting especially kangaroos and the birding is phenomenal too.
🤜 Sorrento - you catch the car ferry ⛴️ from here to Queenscliff, then from there it’s a short distance to Torquay to start the drive along the Great Ocean Road. We stayed in Rye, which has a great dog-friendly beach with shallow water and calm waves. The nearby Blairgowrie pier and marina has the most beautiful unforgettable sunsets 🧡🌅
