DFS Tree 4 | Strongly Connected Edges | CSES Advanced Graph Problems

In the 𝐃𝐅𝐒 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞 Introduction, we threw away Tarjan's algorithm and low[u] arrays in favor of a physical, structural mental model: The Hanging Mobile. We proved that an edge is a bridge if and only if there are zero back-edges jumping over it.

Now, in Phase 2, we use that exact mathematical proof to completely destroy the CSES problem "𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐬" (and its Codeforces equivalent, 118E - Bertown Roads).

The problem asks us to direct every undirected edge in a graph so that you can reach any node from any other node. If you try to guess the edge directions globally, the logic spirals out of control. But by projecting the graph onto a DFS tree, the problem solves itself with two incredibly simple rules.

🔍 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐋 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑:

• 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞: The structural reason why the existence of even a single bridge mathematically guarantees the graph can never be strongly connected.

• 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐱 𝐒𝐮𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜 (𝐝𝐩[𝐮]): How to calculate the exact number of back-edges covering a span-edge in O(1) time as we traverse.

• 𝐄𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: The single, greedy rule for directing Span-Edges and Back-Edges that guarantees a path from the root to every node, and from every node back to the root.

• 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐫: How finding these bridges sets us up for 2-Edge-Connected Components (2-ECC) in Phase 3.
