Hey everybody
What's going on and welcome to Rock N' Roll True Stories and this story is a suggestion from one of my subscribers who asked me to do some more stuff on Faith No More and another subscriber said hey why don't you do a story about the Mike Patton and Anthony Kiedis feud from the early 90s
So back in the early 90s it appeared that there was a feud between Faith No More frontman Mike Patton and Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis now whether this was exaggerated by the press or it was just an angle to exploit to make something entertaining we'll get into that in a bit
So believe it or not Faith No More and Red Hot Chili Peppers only share a few similarities
So in the early 90s both of the singers had long hair and rapped with their shirts off and that's where a lot of the similarities at least appeared to end
Now both bands did have a lot to do with changing the face of different rock genres and they also added a lot of different musical flavors and influences into their music but Faith No More and Red Hot Chili Peppers would first become acquainted in the 80s when Chuck Mosley was the frontman of Faith No More before Mike Patton was even in the picture
So the two bands ended up sharing the bill on a tour that lasted from October until December and which also helped Faith No More reach a much wider audience but it wasn't until 1990 when Mike Patton firmly was established as Faith No More's new singer that really any hostility between the bands began
In the June of 1990 issue of Kerrang magazine Anthony Kiedis made the following comments about Mike Patton saying my drummer says he's gonna kidnap Patton shave his hair off and cut off one of his feet just so he'll be forced to find a style of his own
Now this statement of course fueled a conflict in the press and also got a response from Patton in an interview in 1990
He said that's an interesting one
I don't think he has really you know we're not threatened by each other because our music is really a lot different
The similarities are there in a superficial way but really there's a huge chasm between us
We are kind of on different sides of the spectrum
We're on the rock side and they're kind of on the more traditional funk side
And Patton would say in a separate interview I don't have a clue it's just kind of came out of the blue I mean I could speculate but I really don't know and it doesn't bother me a bit
I got a real kick out of it to tell you the truth
I mean if he's going to talk about me in interviews that's fine it's free press
It's pretty out of line
Either he's feeling inadequate or old or I don't know that's beep
And then finally Mike Patton would say in a separate interview that's a dumb thing that I've got absolutely nothing to do with and I don't really care
Reading that article gave me a good laugh and it sounded like old Anthony felt a little threatened
I don't know
If he wants to give me press instead of his band his girlfriend or whatever that's fine by me
I'm sure he didn't count on it getting slapped on the cover of Kerrang
Then after that they called me up right afterwards asking me to do a rebuttal
What is this Bon Jovi vs. Axl Rose
I don't really need it
So the press wouldn't be running with a story for too long because they would start focusing on Faith No More's inner tension as well as their anger towards touring with Guns N' Roses in the early 90s and the feud would seem like it was over at least until 1999
Now Roddy Bottum stated in Mayhem magazine that were really good friends with that band I like the thing they're doing it at like as a favor adding he doesn't see similarities within the two bands at all outside of the long hair or rapping with a shirt off and legend has it that the two bands would cross paths a few times in the following decade and Patton and Kiedis were nothing but cordial to each other but that would all change in 1999
Now Patton who was no longer in Faith No More at that point in time and he was gearing up to tour with Mr. Bungle who had their third album out called California
Now both bands were signed to the same label with Warner Records and Warner Records thought it would be wise to delay the release of Mr. Bungles record by a month due to the fact that the Red Hot Chili Peppers were releasing their album Californication
So soon Mr. Bungle were told that they were to be removed from a festival bill in Australia at the request of Anthony Kiedis and of course Mike Patton and his bandmates retaliated in the press
So Mike Patton gave an interview at that time saying we were looking at booking some Mr. Bungle shows in Europe this past summer some big festivals which is something we'd never done before
We figured it'd be a good thing
