Pro Acting Coach Breaks Down 17 Dying Scenes | Good & Bad Acting
Acting coach Anthony Gilardi analyzed some of Hollywood's most famous — and infamous — dying scenes. Reviewing movie deaths ranging from great to mediocre to downright terrible, he broke down what went right and wrong in the actors' performances.
Sometimes an over-the-top movie death works, and sometimes the dramatics are better kept to a minimum. According to Gilardi, an actor's approach to their character's death should always depend on the story they're telling. Using examples from classic movies like "The Godfather Part III," "Moulin Rouge!," and "Scarface," Gilardi pointed out common pitfalls that make it easy for any actor to bungle a death scene — even for Oscar-winning film stars, like Natalie Portman and Marion Cotillard, and veteran actors who have racked up dozens of on-screen deaths, like Sean Bean and Samuel L. Jackson. He critiqued the best and worst villain deaths, from the defeat of Commodus in "Gladiator" to Talia al Ghul's final monologue in "The Dark Knight Rises," and pinpointed why these deaths either resonated with audiences or fell short. And he compared the hits and misses of slow-motion deaths, from Willem Dafoe's famous arms-in-the-air scene in "Platoon" to Christopher George's slo-mo death by shuriken in "Enter the Ninja."
