"Most of the losses of Russia's combat aircraft since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine were not due to military actions but due to technical malfunctions, pilot errors, and "friendly" fire. This is according to research conducted by Newsweek. For the analysis, both publicly available data from Oryx intelligence and reports from Russian media were used. As of August 17, Oryx reported 186 lost Russian aircraft, 13 of which are non combat. Meanwhile, Newsweek confirmed the loss of 221 aircraft, including 17 planes and 18 helicopters, recognizing 48 of them as non combat. Among the losses were Su 25, MiG 31, and Ka 52 "Alligator" helicopters. Although not complete, this data indicates the difficult situation of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
