The Facial Action Coding System — developed in 1978 — catalogues 44 individual facial muscle movements and maps them to emotional states.

Cross-cultural research confirmed that six core emotional expressions are recognized consistently across all human cultures studied, including isolated communities with no exposure to outside media.

And then there are micro-expressions: involuntary facial movements lasting as little as one twenty-fifth of a second — too fast to fake, too revealing to hide.
