WHY THERE IS SHORTAGE OF CONDOMS IN INDIA?

🛑 THE "LATEX LAG": WHY CONDOMS ARE DISAPPEARING IN INDIA 🛑

If you’ve noticed empty shelves or a "limited stock" warning on your favorite quick-commerce apps this week, you’re witnessing the latest casualty of the West Asia conflict. As of Friday, April 24, 2026, a significant shortage of condoms has hit Indian pharmacies and online platforms, turning a private health essential into a public supply chain crisis.

Here is why the "silver foil" is becoming hard to find.

1. THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ "CHOKEPOINT"
The primary reason for the shortage isn't a lack of rubber, but a lack of the petrochemicals needed to process it.

The Chemical Blockade: India’s ₹8,000 crore condom industry relies heavily on ammonia (used to stabilize liquid latex) and silicone oil (the primary lubricant).

Import Crisis: India imports nearly 86% of its anhydrous ammonia from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed to commercial traffic due to the ongoing naval conflict, these critical shipments are either stuck or taking long, expensive detours.

Price Surge: The cost of ammonia has jumped by 40–50% in the last three weeks alone, forcing manufacturers to slow down production to manage costs.

2. MANUFACTURING BOTTLENECKS
India produces over 6 billion condoms annually (roughly 17% of global output), but the "war-time" economy has crippled the factory floor:

Lubricant Scarcity: Silicone oil, mostly sourced from specialized refinery processes, has seen an "exorbitant" price hike. Manufacturers like HLL Lifecare (Hindustan Latex) and Mankind Pharma are reportedly grappling with these input shortages.

Packaging Issues: Even the aluminium foil and PVC used for individual packaging are petrochemical derivatives currently facing logistical delays.

Karex Warning: Karex Berhad, the world’s largest producer (which supplies brands like Durex), has warned of a global price hike of 20–30% if the supply chain remains fractured.

3. THE IMPACT ON PUBLIC HEALTH
Experts are raising alarms that this isn't just a "consumer inconvenience" but a serious health risk:

Family Planning: The National Family Planning Programme’s 2030 targets could be hit if the 22 million additional users India needs annually can't access affordable protection.

HIV/STI Risk: Health advocates in high-risk areas like Delhi's GB Road have already reported that "protective supplies are running out," leading to fears of a spike in infections.

The "Population Surge" Joke: On social media, #CondomShortage has trended with dark humor, but for millions of vulnerable households, even a small price increase leads to a decline in use.

THE BIG QUESTION: With the government monitoring the situation as a "priority health issue," will we see a shift to alternative lubricants or a temporary subsidy to keep prices stable?

Are you seeing the shortage in your city yet, or are you switching to other contraceptive methods until the "Strait of Hormuz" reopens? 👇
