The Harbor Seal "Aussie" Gives Birth

"Aussie" gave birth today at the Hopkins Marine Station. She was in labor for quite a while before she started really pushing. You can first see the mucous plug and amniotic sac that the pup is in. A gull breaks the sac and the pup's head is visible. The mom begins pushing again and the pup emerges. You can see remnants of the lanugo coat coming off. The mom looks like she is petting the pup at the end but what she is really doing is directing the pup to her teats to nurse. She will nurse the pup for 3 to 4 weeks and then wean it and it is on its own from that point on.
