XTC - King For A Day Bass Cover
This is another fantastic song off XTC’s Oranges and Lemons album that also features some gems like “Mayor of Simpleton”, “One of the Millions”, and “Scarecrow People”. Particularly of interest on this track are the vocal harmonies between Colin Moulding’s lead and Andy Partridge’s backup vocals, which really make for a rich and intricate chorus section.
This is the first time I’ve spent the time to actually put to practice learning a song by ear - typically I’m reading off some tabs/Rocksmith, but it’s much easier to enjoy the song this way. In this live performance on Letterman, you can actually see two basses being used:

Assuming this is how it was recorded, then my cover is somewhat of an “arrangement” of the more interesting portions of both bass parts that I could pick out. Not perfect, and I flubbed some of Moulding’s variations at the end of the song, but it gets 90% of the job done!
I finally made an attempt to go a little more “produced” this time, compared to the years I’ve spent just recording myself through my iPhone. This time I was able to plug in to my bass amp and output that directly to Audacity using a Rocksmith “Real Tone” cable. Ideal? No, an interface would be better. But even without any real editing, and simply slapping together some MP3’s and a video in iMovie (on my phone) already seems to be a vast improvement on my previous methods.
Enjoy ~
