Beginning Woodturner: Turning a Tiny Bowl
Turning tiny bowls is good practice that doesn't take a lot of time or material. I made several of these in quick succession. Most are flawed; they were practice more than projects. But people think they're cute. Some offered suggestions as to what they can be used for.
I plan to make more of these for such things as bedside catch-alls for keys and coins and salt dishes for the dining table.
If you have come over here from Oregon Old Timer, you probably know the story. I made a couple of projects on a wood lathe in junior high school wood shop in the 1950s. I didn't touch a lathe again until July last year. I'd watched a few woodturning videos and got the bug. The prices of new lathes stopped me, but I found a lathe like the one I'd used in junior high at a sale and bought it for $200. That, and a few tools, got me started.
Changing speeds required loosening the motor mounts and moving a belt to different pulleys. I replaced that motor with a variable-speed treadmill motor and made a video of the conversion.

My first projects were simple goblets and bowls. I made toothpick holders and twig pots to sell on Etsy.

My home is in the woods, so there is no shortage of raw material. Friends give me wood that doesn't grow here, so I explore what I can get out of different kinds.
Woodturning is an adventure in learning and creating. It's great fun, even for a beginner.
