VERSACE CLOSES MILAN FASHION WEEK
Donatella Versace closed the four-day whirlwind of top designers presenting their lines during Milan fashion week, with a collection that continued the label's apparent goal of reshaping its super-sexy reputation.
"The collection is dedicated to women who have a lot of influence in everything we do, " Versace told AP Entertainment, "so the collection describe a woman that's determined, and a woman who knows what she's doing, a woman who's determined but romantic at the same time. The wardrobe of a woman who disappears is a while, so it's back this season, strongly, the shoulders are a little padded, and the everything is worn over fluid dresses, the colours are bright, like bright green and turquoise and yellow, with a lot of beige which I call blonde because they're a very golden beige."
The styles were more about a working - rather than a wanton - woman, as symbolised by the return of the blazer, purposely oversized but never stiff.
"This jacket is not an ostentatious piece of power dressing," Donatella wrote in her show notes, noting that the jacket - minus the aggressive shoulder pads of the past - comes in satin and especially softened linen.
Many of Donatella's styles on Thursday (27SEP07) were belted at the waist, the new focal point of this season's round of collections. The designer also showed some of the few trousers seen on the current runway.
Donatella's cropped trousers are just tight enough to be called Versace and are cuffed mid-calf. All outfits were accessorised by the designer's signature ultra high heel, this season it's a wedged stiletto.
While her daywear was classic sand or khaki, with sporty pockets playing a major role, her evening wear burst into colour in a series of Grecian gowns in silk jersey. Strategic cut-outs in the back hint at what is otherwise left to the imagination.
