Vowel quadrilaterals help us describe how we use the mouth to pronounce vowels by using a few parameters:

Vowel Height

Lip Rounding
Vowel Duration
Vowel height refers to the vertical position of the tongue.

High vowels have the mouth more closed with the tongue in a higher position.

Low vowels have the mouth more open with the tongue in a lower position.
Vowel backness refers to the horizontal position of tongue.

Front vowels have the tongue closer to the front of the mouth.

Back vowels have the tongue closer to the back of the mouth.
Lip rounding refers to how rounded the lips are.

Rounded vowels are pronounced with the lips in a more rounded position.

Unrounded vowels are pronounced with the lips in a more rounded position.
Vowel duration refers to the length of the vowel.

Long vowels have a longer duration.
