Dried fruits like raisins, sultanas and currants - all found in hot cross buns - are “highly toxic” to pets, particularly dogs.

These foods contain compounds like tartaric acid, which can cause kidney damage, even in small amounts.

A spokesperson for Kennel Store told Yahoo News “What might seem like a harmless snack could actually lead to serious potential harm for your dog, making it crucial for owners to be educated.”

The onset of symptoms after a dog eats grapes or raisins can vary, but they can appear quite quickly, usually within hours of consumption.

The spokesperson said, “In some cases, symptoms like vomiting or diarrhoea can show up within six to 12 hours, but sometimes these symptoms can be delayed for up to one or two days… If you believe they have eaten any grapes or dried fruit, take them to the vet immediately.”
