Concorde Flight from Oakland (1987)

My wife and I have interest in all things aviation. In 1987 the Concorde supersonic transport came to Oakland International Airport for a series of joy ride flights. Fortunately we jumped at the rare opportunity. We bought tickets at $895 each, which was a sizable amount (then and now!). What we got was a two-hour adventure that we will never forget. The flight departed Oakland and flew half way to Hawaii before turning back and landing right back where we started. We even purchased special outfits to look our best, and our stewardess noticed and complimented. Yes, I said stewardess. Flight service included the full treatment of normal point-to-point Concorde travel, including fine French Champagne, fancy foods and take-home gifts. One item was a Captain-signed certificate that we had travelled Mach 2, twice the speed of sound. We also saw the curvature of the earth from 60,000 feet. I brought along chewing gum so later I could hand out the relabeled 'Double-Mach' gum to friends and family. Sadly, Concordes no longer fly. Our aircraft, F-BVFF, now sits idle on top of a display stand at Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris. Some day supersonic airline travel will return, but I'm sure glad we experienced the first generation SSTs. As a bonus, we found out later that we actually got three rides for the price of two. Our future son Skyler was along for the ride, unbeknownst to us!
