Can autism run in families? #50factsfor50years #autism

Autism is a heritable condition, meaning it can run in families. We talk to and support many parents who have discovered their own autism after learning so much about autistic traits to care for their autistic children. Sometimes it can even be difficult for undiagnosed autistic parents to identify their child’s differences (from their peers) because the parent and child are so alike.

This is one reason why whole-family support is so important. A parent of any neurotype who is well supported to take care of their own needs and honour their own strengths has a stronger foundation to support their child.
