Can Walgreens Survive Amazon Pharmacy? | Walgreens (WBA) Stock Analysis
Just last week Amazon announced that they would be getting to the pharmacy game with Amazon Pharmacy. With household names like Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid, can they survive Amazon Pharmacy?
Walgreens has been around for many years and has been one of those places that you go to for convenience. From what they offer in their stores for you to grab really quickly or for what the topic at hand is, pharmaceuticals, they are a name that almost all people know and adore.
As Seth brings up, Amazon getting into the pharmaceutical game raises a lot of questions in terms of how will this all be done. Most people like to go and meet with their pharmacist directly or get more information from them as they are right there. How would this play out if Amazon Pharmacy started getting multiple calls a day from people needing help with the pills or other medications that they are getting? Would you be put in a queue? Is someone assigned to you to get the help that you need.
Rather than all of that, just going to your pharmacist in person, getting the answer you needed, and then going about your day just seems more feasible (for now).
Regardless, Amazon is taking aim at the industry and getting ready to get their feet wet with it but they aren't selling everything. Sure you can get your more common medications such as insulin and things like that but your Schedule II medications like opioids and things like that, will still need done in person. That's for good reason. Think of it this way, if you were able to get opioids with your Prime membership, what's to stop anyone from getting into your account and just ordering them for you.
Sure Amazon says that you can create an account that is secure to your profile, but its still out there and if life has taught us anything, things in the internet are accessible to just about anyone that is determined enough to get it.
I digress in this but with a company like Walgreens whom is still dominant in the space for customer service and getting things right for their customers, i still think this will be a while before getting your meds via Prime delivery will be taking over your medicine cabinets any time soon.
